Tips on Starting a Wedding Photography Business
These days, there are a lot of aspiring and amateur photographers who already own a DSLR camera whose quality can rival that of a professional’s. So it seems as if almost anybody can get into the wedding photography business because all you need is to have the bride and groom pose in front of the camera, right? Not necessarily.
If you want wedding photography to be your bread and butter, you have to treat it like any other business venture. Here are a few more tips on how those who love wedding photography can start turning this into a lucrative career.
First, create a solid business plan. Remember that wedding photography takes more than tinkering with your digital camera to succeed. Aside from the ‘eye’ that you have behind the lens, you also need to have an eye for business.
Make sure that the wedding photography industry in your area has not boomed yet. If it hasn’t, how can you be part of its expansion? If it is already a booming industry in your area, how can you set yourself apart from the rest of the other wedding photographers so that clients will consider getting your services?
Second, make sure that you have an excellent portfolio which you can present to your clients. Your portfolio is a showcasing of your best work as a wedding photographer. If you have only taken pictures on a couple of weddings in the past, that’s already a good enough portfolio to build upon. What is important is for the clients to see samples of your work, and they will decide from there whether you are worth hiring or not.
Third, make sure that you have enough startup capital to get your wedding photography business off the ground. This will include some upgrades on the equipment that you currently have, spend a little on marketing your services and purchase everything that you need to start your wedding photography business.
Most importantly, make sure that you love what you are doing. In the wedding photography business, you will be working with bridezillas, anxious grooms, nervous parents and overwrought bridesmaids or groomsmen.
To take great pictures, you need to have the talent, patience and a love for what you are doing so that you can turn your wedding photography business into a resounding success
